New Beers from the Japanese Majors in 2019: Suntory Holdings Limited / 日本の大手企業からの新しいビール 2019: サントリー

We’re into 2019 now. It's time to take stock of new beers brought out in 2019 by the four major breweries in Japan: Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory. I'll discuss them each in a separate post. I'll also give the current RateBeer weighted average score and my own rating score (both scores out of a possible total of five), keeping in mind that most of these newer brews have fewer than ten ratings.

Finally, a look at what Suntory made in 2019:

Suntory Patto Hanayagu Kuse ni Naru (Nama) Beer

Pale Lager - Intl / Premium / 5.5% / My Rating: 3.2 / RateBeer Avg: 2.98

Nose of citrus, light sweet peach, pear, and small bit of tropical fruit. Deep bright gold color. Flavors similar to aroma: light tropical fruit, La France pears, wheat, sugar – all sweet and quite fruity. Thin-medium body. Almost tastes like a sweet dessert thing. Okay. Would be more interesting if they upped the ante a bit on the Galaxy hops.

Suntory Tokyo Craft Kolsch Style 2019

Kölsch / Kölsch-Style / 5% / My Rating: 3.2 / RateBeer Avg: 3.05

Light fruity and bready nose, with some citrus, and yeast. Clear bright gold color. Thin bready maltiness, citrus, apples, mild stone fruit, and light bitterness. Thin-medium body. Hmmm…. mild everywhere and maybe too fruity.

Suntory The Malts Hop Paradise

Pale Lager - India / Hoppy / 6% / My Rating: 3.3 / RateBeer Avg: 3.00

Aroma of doughy malt, sweet mild fruit. Clear gold color, quickly diminishing white head. Gentle pale malts, more fruitiness than expected, a little citrus, and some hop bitterness in mid and final. Thin-medium body. The label also touts the Amarillo hops used. And from the abundance of bright green hop cones pictured, you’d like to think that maybe....  just perhaps …. but nah … they never really let loose with hops. Seems more like an ale, actually. Drinkable, for sure.

Suntory The Premium Malt’s Master’s Dream Yamazaki Cask-Aged Blend

Pilsener – Imperial / 7% / My Rating: 3.4 / RateBeer Avg: 3.18

Nose of wood, light alc. fumes, apples, grapes. Thin fruity wine-like flavors, some light maltiness. Thin-medium body. Interesting as an experiment... but ... why age a pils? Because you can? Because you have a lot of Suntory whiskey barrels? The aging seems to have diminished the flavors. This is okay, but the regular Master's Dream is a more full-featured beer.

Suntory The Premium Malt's Jōzōka no Okurimono Hana

Pale Lager - Intl / Premium / 5.5% / My Rating: 3.4 / RateBeer Avg: 3.07

Fuzzy, dusty sort of grain aroma, with light stone fruit. Clear pale gold color. Grain, bread, mild grass, moderate malty sweetness, and some lightly peppery hops. Thin-medium body. Fairly tasty stuff

Suntory The Premium Malts Hokkaido Gentai

Pale Lager - India / Hoppy / 5.5% / RateBeer Avg: 3.00

No chance to try this one

Suntory Magnum Dry Honkarakuchi

Pale Lager - North Am. / Light / 6% / My Rating: 2.2 / RateBeer Avg: 2.55

So, this one is back after five-six years, with a slight jump in alc. level. And who cares? Nose of stale fruit, light spirits, slightly medicinal. Medium gold color. Stone fruit, spirits, and fairly dry through mid palate and finish. Medium body. Aroma is a bit off-putting; flavors are pretty much those of a normal junky pale lager

Suntory Kin-Mugi Gold Lager

Pale Lager - North Am. / Light / 6% / My Rating: 1.9 / RateBeer Avg: 2.55

Stale, cardboard nose, with a hint of wet dog, and plenty of grain spirits. Deep gold color. Sharp rough stone fruit flavor, along with some grain spirits. The spirits intensify in mid palate, and then it morphs into a bittersweet finish. Thin-medium body. Pretty bad.

Suntory Itadaki (8%)

Pilsener – Imperial / 8% / My Rating: 2 / RateBeer Avg: 2.58

Floral nose, with spirits, wet cement, and dusty dirt road smells. Bright gold color. Flavors of alcohol-laced stone fruit, grain, bitter spirits, and a hint of citrus. Medium body. The alcohol level (from the grain spirits) is too high... though it wouldn't really change the overall flavor if it were lower. Junk.

New Beers from the Japanese Major Brewing Companies in 2018: Suntory Liquors Limited / 日本の大手企業からの新しいビール 2018: サントリー

We’re into 2019 now. It's time to take stock of new beers brought out in 2018 by the four major breweries in Japan: Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory. I'll discuss them each in a separate post. I'll also give the current RateBeer weighted average score and my own rating score (both scores out of a possible total of five), keeping in mind that most of these newer brews have fewer than ten ratings.

In the three previous posts we discussed the offerings from Asahi Breweries (See HERE), Kirin Brewery Company (See HERE), and Sapporo Breweries (See HERE).

Finally, let’s have a look at what came our way from Suntory Liquors Limited in 2018:

Suntory The Premium Malt's Master's Dream Diamond Malt no Megumi
Pilsener / 5% / RateBeer Avg. 3.19 / My Rating 3.6
Deep fruity nose, bread, muscat, grapes, and light spiciness. Pretty color: orange amber, with a creamy white head. Bready initial flavor, some grain, moderate fruit sweetness, and balances near finish with some sticky hops. Smooth fruity aftertaste. Medium body. Rather ale-like. The fruity notes make this version quite different from the other two in the series, in both malt and hop character. Superb beer. The three beers in the Master’s Dream series are easily the best from any of the four major beer producers in Japan. The regular Master’s Dream can be found in many liquor stores and convenience stores; the other two require a bit more luck or conscientious searching.

Suntory The Premium Malt's Deep Aroma
Pilsener / 5.5% / RateBeer Avg. 3.02 / My Rating 3.4
Floral nose with a very pleasant deep maltiness. Clear bright gold color. Flavors of malt, grin, fresh noble-like hops. Clean and mildly sweet, with a moderately malty finish. Thin-medium body. Has the markings of a Premium Malt's. Flavor is a bit deeper and more substantial than the aroma. This one was a very welcome surprise at the end of the year.

Three new ones in Suntory’s Tokyo Craft series:

Suntory Tokyo Craft Barley Wine 2018
Barley Wine / Wheat Wine / 9% / RateBeer Avg. 2.98 / My Rating 3.2
Someone joked that it's "barely wine," and so let's see. Nose of caramel, candied fruit, with a sort of metallic hit. Medium amber color. Flavors of stone fruit, caramel, apples, and a bit of buzzy hops. Medium body -- and thin for the style. Carbonation is a bit too effusive as well. Seems more like a simple strong ale (or perhaps an old ale) rather than a barley wine. Not sure if this one will improve with age.

Suntory Tokyo Craft Belgian White Style
Witbier/ 5% / RateBeer Avg. 3 / My Rating 2.7
Moderate wheaty nose, with light sourish citrus, cake frosting, and coriander. Clear light straw, fat white head, and thick lace. Flavors of heavy sweetish malt, wheat yeah, but a bit artificial. Orange peel from mid palate. A thin finish, which is mostly a fading light malty sweetness. Medium body. Nice enough aroma, but flavors are a little too sweet to be truly refreshing as a witbier.

Suntory Tokyo Craft IPA
IPA / 6.5% / RateBeer Avg. 3.02 / My Rating 3.3
Fuzzy and lightly pungent citrus nose with light caramel. Medium dark orange/amber color, rocky off-white head, and sticky lace. Fairly rich stone fruit initial flavor, with some caramel, a mélange of mild citrus, and light buzzing hops. Medium body. Kind of like a "starter" IPA, one that won't scare pale lager drinkers away. Has good basic structure, but doesn't go too far with either bitterness or maltiness.

A new fruity line, called “Beer Recipe,” for whatever reason…

Suntory Beer Recipe Cassis Maroyaka Beer
Fruit Beer / 5.5% / RateBeer Avg. 2.92 / My Rating 2.7
Aroma of cassis, a bit spritzy. Light grain with a dollop of cream. Light thin reddish color, small pink head. Gentle tart cassis, light sweet bread, tiny threads of hops. Thin body, and fairly dry. Just a bit astringent. Very tame. Not unpleasant, but, yes, rather like a beer cocktail.

Suntory Beer Recipe Citrus Sawayaka Beer
Pale Lager / 5.5% / RateBeer Avg. 2.86 / My Rating 2.8
Nose of citrus, starch, and a bit of light bread. Medium gold straw color, with a thin ring of white foam. Moderately sweet malt, with a little smack of fruitiness in mid palate, and a thin starchy sweetish finish. Caribbean style? No fruit added. Perhaps a slice of lime would improve it? Probably not. Label art shows what looks to be a fat yellow toad emerging from the bottle.

Suntory Beer Recipe Orange Peel Sawayaka Beer
Witbier / 5% / RateBeer Avg. 2.85 / My Rating 2.8
Moderately malty nose, with clear orange peel, and coriander comes through after a big swirl. Somewhat like a mild aftershave lotion. Pale gold color, with an initially creamy head. Light wheat flavor, light coriander, thin orange in background. Thin-medium body, and smooth on the tongue. California-style beer? The only thing that comes to mind is Coronado's wit brews -- perhaps the Suntory reps got toasted on those and flew home before they tried anything else on offer. Would be a decent cool-down drink in the summer. Otherwise,....

Suntory Zeitaku Lager Kohaku no Kire
Bock - Dunkler / Urbock / 7% / RateBeer Avg. 2.9 / My Rating 2.7
Malty nose, with medium dark roast, and some dark sugar. Light reddish/copper color. Mild sweet toasted malt flavor, hint of dark fruit, and a slight alcohol presence. No evidence of the coriander seed. Medium body. Somewhat tasty and approaching the style, but why did they have to jack it up to 7%? I suppose because it's the trend these days -- stronger stuff for a quicker buzz. The alcohol interferes here.

Suntory Kyo no Aki Zeitaku-zukuri
Oktoberfest / Märzen / 6% / RateBeer Avg. 2.7 / My Rating 2.3
Fuzzy sort of spirits nose, with grain, caramel, and a hint of grapes. Medium gold color. Light roast, grain, some caramel, grain spirits, and a thin sweet finish. Medium body. Not completely disgusting, but far from good. This one might be a relaunch of Suntory's Kyo no Zeitaku from a couple of years ago.

Suntory The Malt’s Mugi Kaoru
Low Alcohol / 3.5% / RateBeer Avg. 2.92 / My Rating 2.9
Fresh, malty, nose, with some citrus zip to it. Medium gold color, with generous carbonation rising. Thin malty flavor, with some grain, mild bitterness in mid palate, and a light sugared finish. Thin body, a bit watery. Pleasant nose, but the flavors are so mild, even for this kind of low alc. stuff. Okay, but innocuous.

Suntory The Brew Sparkling Hop
Pale Lager / 5% / RateBeer Avg. 2.64 / My Rating 1.6
Stinky, sewerish spirits aroma, with maybe some rotten fruit. Clear, sterile-looking gold color, with tired tiny single bubbles wafting upwards. Rough flavors, with a sort or sweet-n-sour fruitiness and rasty spirits. Thin-medium body, with tongue- and throat-scraping carbonation. Almost painful to drink. Really. Suntory's The Brew series is absolutely one of the worst.

Suntory Kin-Mugi Koime no Hitotoki
Pale Lager / 6% / RateBeer Avg. 2.79 / My Rating 2.3
Watery, thin caramel aroma, thin stone fruit. Medium gold color, and a thin dissipating head. Fuzzy fruity initial flavor, and then it clears into stone fruit, and fairly rude spirits. Thin-medium body. Spirits not too evident in aroma; more in flavor. Anyway.... no one should bother with this one.

Suntory Itadaki Gokujō Zero
Imperial Pils/Strong Pale Lager / 7% / RateBeer Avg. 2.51 / My Rating 1.9
Thin, sterile malt aroma, with sugar and a light indeterminate sort of fruitiness. Pale straw color, minimal head. Mild malt flavor, slightly harsh fruit, spirits, and herbal throat lozenges. Thin-medium body. Ten ingredients!!! It's made with beans! ...and much more! And less, too...no carbs! And more...disgusting flavors! And less, too.... cheap as can be. Possibly takes the award as the least drinkable beer produced in Japan in 2018.
